Hi folks!
Reading the 'Suspicious proliferation of giants ^v^' thread i noticed
i'm not alone at last. But it seems i'm the only one here who has
problems with this.
I had a quite a long pause (army, 3 knee operations, and a slipped disk
in my back over a time of 6 years) during which i did only do very few
sport.
Well, i'm 1.87m - which i think is about 6'2, right - at 117Kg and
although i can outpush most folks in our training classes with my zuki,
i'm by far too slow to do real sparring.
Now i read that you guys are able to sweep somebody who's doing the
jumping-up-and-down style when sparring, which is something i just
cannot imagine to manage by now.
So, there come some questions to my mind:
* Has anyone of you guys at least a bit of fat, or is all this mass
pure muscles?
* Any pointers to what i can train to get enough strength to
accelerate my mass?
What i'm doing right now, is:
* Karate training, 4 times a week
* Jogging (8-10km) on the 5th day
* 30km of biking (2x15 km to/from work)
* eating mostly vegs, chicken and fish, no sweets, no burgers
and although all the folks that i train with say i lost weight, the
scales say i didn't :-( However, i gained alot of constitution and
strength, and nearly doubled my jogging distance since i started - but
no weight reduction.
Ah, somebody already suggested to do some sprinting between the jogging
to gain 'speed power', but at the moment, i just don't have the breath
to do so.
I know, the FAQ says not to talk about your grade, but i think it's okay
to mention that i'm still a undergrad, so if you tell me "just continue
with this training program and it'll come" i'm happy to believe this.
Any ideas on what to do?
Mike

Nah. You just have to sparr differently than a little person. A short
sword cuts fast, and a long sword cuts deeply.
>Now i read that you guys are able to sweep somebody who's doing the

Sounds like a problem with your sweeps to me.
>So, there come some questions to my mind:

Sure, I have some fat. About six percent, to be exact. I have a rare
thyroid disease.
> * Any pointers to what i can train to get enough strength to

The mass is already there dragging at you, no? So do lots of kata very
hard and fast. It's simply a matter of practicing accelerating that mass.

Sounds good. Concentrate more on cutting out fats than sugars. Sugars
(simple carbohydrates) aren't very easily converted into fats (triglycerides).
>and although all the folks that i train with say i lost weight, the
>scales say i didn't :-(
Don't use the scale. Use the mirror. The goal is to lose fat, not weight.
If you lose "weight" with a regime primarily consisting of excercise, you
will add muscle mass at the same time, and may not lose any actual
*weight*. But you will be fitter, stronger, and faster.
>Ah, somebody already suggested to do some sprinting between the jogging

Endurance is another issue entirely. Kata is good for that, too.
>I know, the FAQ says not to talk about your grade, but i think it's okay
>to mention that i'm still a undergrad
In this case it's relevant, yes.
>so if you tell me "just continue
>with this training program and it'll come" i'm happy to believe this.
This is also true. Work hard, but patient with yourself also.

Yupp, i noticed that one. I'm quite good at kihon-ippon kumite.
> Sounds like a problem with your sweeps to me.
Well, maybe, but what i wanted to say is, that the sweep itself works,
but i cannot time it correctly. Can't really tell if it's a speed or a
coordination problem.
> The mass is already there dragging at you, no? So do lots of kata very

Yeah, i'm doing alot of kata anyways. I'll keep an eye on trying to
make it faster.

Hmm, that's interresting. Perhaps i should read a bit more about
'dietics?' - just looked the term up, hope it's the right one.

Yes, it already feels this way. Training sessions themself are much
easier now, and no more aching muscles for several weeks now.

OK, thanks for the pointers and the encuraging words.

You just have to sparr differently than a little person. A short > sword cuts fast, and a long sword cuts deeply. I improved my speed with plyometric weight training. Take a light weight and press/push it up fast. I have a lot of slow twitch muscle fibre so I really have to work hard with quick exercises to gain any speed. There are quite a few books available on this subject or just search 'plyometric' on the web. One site with a good overview is http://www.vision.net.au/%7Ejimison/plyometrics/index.html About your legs..mmmm..these are explosive exercises so caution, caution, caution. Only you will know if the knees will take it. Normally these exercises are done in conjunction with speed and weight training programs. > > >Now i read that you guys are able to sweep somebody who's doing the > >jumping-up-and-down style when sparring, which is something i just > >cannot imagine to manage by now. > > Sounds like a problem with your sweeps to me. > > >So, there come some questions to my mind: > > > > * Has anyone of you guys at least a bit of fat, or is all this mass > >pure muscles? > > Sure, I have some fat. I can feel the burn now. Mmmmmmm muscle burn. > > Sounds good. Concentrate more on cutting out fats than sugars. But you will be fitter, stronger, and faster. Depends on what you call fittness. If your goal is strength and all you do is strength training then your cardiovascular fitness will likely suffer. If your goal is cardiovascular fitness and all you do is run then your strength (upper body at least) will suffer. Dammit! I thought 117Kg is 234lbs - which is still too much though :-]
Looks like lbs and our pounds are not the same.

Well, that makes sense to me. Can't wait to see it happen...

Whoah, wait a minute!!! I guess you have overlooked that part:
* 30km of biking (2x15 km to/from work)
I'm a fulltime worker, perhaps i should add the stress to get out of
work right on time for the training to my training program ;-) All the
stuff happens between 1900h and 2300h. After that it's usually falling
into coma in front of the TV, watching Conan.

You're only 117kg and you say you're slow ? I'm 140kg or so and I'm as fast (or faster) with my kicks than every other black belts, and just slightly slower for footwork. Come on... You can do it. Is your back ok or do you have to be careful ?) -- For moving rapidly, you don't need endurance. You need raw explosive strenght and good technique. Of course, you need the cardio to support this strenght. That's normal. You gained muscle, and your bones are getting stronger/tougher (heavier...). You lost fat and water, it's impossible that you didn't. You just gained a lot of muscle mass. That's ok. > Ah, somebody already suggested to do some sprinting between the jogging > to gain 'speed power', but at the moment, i just don't have the breath > to do so. There are many other things that you can do. Here's what I suggest: If you feel like you still need to lose fat, go on with the cardio regimen you have (as long as you feel ok all the time. Watch out for overtraining!) Go to a weight lifting center. Ask the specialist there (choose a place where there are competent people ! And don't mess with your back !) for a program. What you need to develop specifically is your legs (calves too !), abs and lower back. With strong legs/lower body, you will be able to move faster. Of course, you want to develop the rest too... Look for raw strenght exercises. Don't train as a body builder ! Use multiple-joints exercises and keep the charges high/reps low. Instead of adding sprints into your jogging, start basic plyometrics. (The best book I could suggest you to learn about plyometrics is from a guy named CHU, Donald (or Brian ?? Not sure) -- "Jumping into plyometrics" ...). It will be much more efficient (especally coupled with weights !) and your cardio won't limit them. Plyometrics really are the key to speed for us big guys. Hope I could help... Moine97 WebMestre "Penseurs" http://pages.infinit.net/penseurs

This depends on what goal you want to accomplish. Speed just comes
with time, and practice. You get power by making power. Set little goals in
power lifting (bench pressing etc..) with iron weights, and muscle building
iron machines. (Persistence with reaching little set goals) Example lift
100 lbs the first few months, then increase to 110 lbs, then the next few
months 120lbs and so on... . When weight lifting let your body rest at
least 48 hrs before next heavy work out. Jog in betwteen other days. Rest
on 7th day. Find your limits of where your body is now, DON'T OVER WORK
OUT, this may cause injury, or burn out.
For now I guess the limits the human body can withstand with human
strength, can be seen from watching the TV shows of competitions of the
Worlds Strongest Man TV shows.
And for the limits of speed, I don't think anyone was ever faster than
Bruce Lee in martial arts.
I think it is a good idea to count the number of kicks, blocks,
strikes and punches you can throw. Keep a record of this, and increase this
too.
If your goal is just to be a one on one good fighter, then that's how
you should practice. If you want to be able to fight 2 or more people at
the same time, you should practice sparring with 2 or more people at the
same time. If your goal is to be a one man army, then you need to study
Navy Seal techniques and so on.
If you like Shotokan, try to master all the Shotokan techniques.

Hmm, i've seen that theory of your's in another thread, but here i
totally disagree. Doing that
kickboxing-karate-tiger-master-fighter-sand-back-stroboscope-kicking
will definitely ruin exact technique.
Even if you keep an eye on it, that blast-blast-blast stuff can't be
focused propperly.
I'll post a conclusion of your's and all the other replies i got, when
i'm done with it, but i can already say, that training exactly fired
single high-speed shots should be more effective, and better for the
end-result.
Nope, i'm not into that streetfighting karate-ninja stuff. I'm sure if
i'm really in trouble, i'll get along, but that's not what i'm training
for, and i definitely don't want to get this theme into my training.

[chuckle] I was going to write you some email warning you that this guy is
a putz and nobody around here listens to him, but I see you've figured it
out for yourself...
Smart1234, if you're reading this, I must regretfully inform you that you
